Exodus 15:20
And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
Meaning
Debated: “beloved” or “rebellion”
From the Hebrew Miryam (מִרְיָם) — the same name that became Mary in Greek. Strong’s lexicon links it to meri, “rebellion”; another view connects it to the Egyptian mry, “beloved”.
In the original:מִרְיָם Miryâm · Strong H4813
Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron — most likely the girl who watched over her brother’s basket on the Nile. A prophetess, she led the women with timbrels in song after the crossing of the sea. Micah remembers her alongside Moses and Aaron as sent by God.
And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
