Luke 1:13
But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
Meaning
“The LORD is gracious”
John comes from the Greek Iōannēs (Ἰωάννης), a form of the Hebrew Yohanan (יוֹחָנָן): Yah (the LORD) and hanan (to show favour) — “the LORD is gracious”, “the LORD has favoured”.
In the original:Ἰωάννης Iōánnēs · Strong G2491יְהוֹחָנָן Yᵉhôwchânân · Strong H3076
The name came from heaven: the angel told Zechariah his son would be called John, and the father, unable to speak, confirmed it in writing. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. Another John, son of Zebedee, was the beloved disciple — the fourth Gospel, three letters and Revelation are credited to him.
But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
