Biblical meaning of the name Elisha

Meaning

“God is salvation”

From the Hebrew Elisha (אֱלִישָׁע): El (God) and yasha (to save) — “God is salvation”, the most accepted reading. Strong’s lexicon prefers to link it to Elishua, “God of supplication”.

Who was Elisha in the Bible?

Elisha was ploughing when Elijah cast his mantle upon him. He followed the prophet to the end, asked for a double portion of his spirit and saw him taken up to heaven. His ministry was marked by miracles: the healing of Naaman, the widow’s oil, the Shunammite’s son brought back to life.
