Biblical meaning of the name Mary

Meaning

Debated: “beloved” or “rebellion”

Mary is the Greek form of Miriam (מִרְיָם), the name of Moses’ sister. The meaning is uncertain: Strong’s lexicon links it to meri, “rebellion”; another view connects it to the Egyptian mry, “beloved”.
