Biblical meaning of the name Luke

Meaning

A Latin name of uncertain meaning

Luke (Loukas, Λουκᾶς) is a Greek name of Latin origin — Strong’s lexicon takes it as a short form of Lucanus. The popular meaning “light-giving” comes from linking it to the Latin lux (light); it is a guess, not something the Bible says. Another reading is “man from Lucania”, a region in southern Italy.

Who was Luke in the Bible?

Luke was a physician and Paul’s travelling companion. Church tradition credits him with the Gospel that bears his name and the book of Acts, both addressed to Theophilus. In Paul’s last imprisonment, he was the one still at his side.
