The meaning of Jehovah Rapha in the Bible

At Marah the people found bitter water, and God made it sweet (Exodus 15:23-25). Then he introduces himself as the one who heals — not as one remedy among others, but as the source of his people's health. The King James translates rapha as “heal” and “cure”; Strong's lexicon says its first sense is to mend, to stitch together what was torn.

The Psalms repeat the promise: he “healeth all thy diseases” (Psalm 103:3) and “healeth the broken in heart” (Psalm 147:3). And Isaiah says of the suffering Servant: “with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). Jehovah Rapha is not one of the Bible's compound names, like Jehovah Jireh; it is a way of summing up this revelation.

Isaiah 53:5

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
