The meaning of Jehovah Jireh in the Bible

Jireh comes from the verb ra'ah (H7200), “to see”. In English, “provide” holds the same idea — from the Latin pro-videre, to see ahead and take care of what is lacking. When Isaac asks where the lamb is, Abraham answers, “God will provide himself a lamb” (Genesis 22:8). On the mountaintop God sees and provides — and the place is named after that experience.

The mountain is Moriah, where the temple would later be built (2 Chronicles 3:1), and many Christians see in Genesis 22 a foreshadowing of the cross: God “spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all” (Romans 8:32). Jehovah Jireh is not a formula for getting things, but trust that God sees the need and takes care of it in his time.

Where Jehovah Jireh appears

And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Frequently asked questions
