It rained forty days in the flood (Genesis 7:12), Moses spent forty days on the mountain (Exodus 24:18), Israel wandered forty years in the wilderness and Jesus fasted forty days before beginning his ministry (Matthew 4:2).

Elijah walked forty days to the mountain of God (1 Kings 19:8).
In the New Testament, Jesus' forty days in the wilderness echo Israel's forty years: where the people fell, he stayed faithful. And after the resurrection Jesus spent forty days with his disciples, speaking of the kingdom of God, before he ascended (Acts 1:3). 40 is not a magic deadline: it is the time God uses to form his people.

And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.
