Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Hebrew word · Strong H6005
Immanuel means “God with us”. It is the name of the son promised in Isaiah 7:14 — “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” — and Matthew applies it to Jesus: “Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (Matthew 1:23).

The name joins three Hebrew parts: im, “with”; -nu, “us”; and El, “God”. In Isaiah it is a sign given to King Ahaz in a time of threat: God would not abandon his people. The name returns in Isaiah 8:8, spoken over the land of Judah itself.
Matthew sees the promise fulfilled in the birth of Jesus: in him, God is not only beside his people but among them, made man. The Gospel that begins with “God with us” ends with Jesus' promise: “lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20).
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
