In the Bible, forgiveness runs in two directions: God forgives those who repent, and those who have been forgiven learn to forgive. It is not forgetting what happened; it is giving up the right to collect — the way God did with us.
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Right after the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus returns to the one request he stopped to explain: forgiveness.
Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
Peter thought seven times was generous; seventy times seven means: stop counting.
