Sermon title

Mothers who leave a legacy of faith

Main idea

A mother’s faith reaches across generations: she prays, she entrusts her children to God and she teaches them.

Text

When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

Introduction

When Paul thinks of Timothy’s faith, he remembers two women: his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. The Bible is full of mothers like them — ordinary women whose faith shaped history.

1. A mother who prays

For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

1 Samuel 1:27 · Read the chapter →

Hannah asked God for a son with tears and, when Samuel was born, said this was the child she had prayed for. A mother’s prayer is one of the greatest gifts a child can receive.

Application: Mothers: pray for your children by name, every day.

2. A mother who entrusts to God

And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink.

Exodus 2:3 · Read the chapter →

Moses’ mother — Jochebed, Exodus 6:20 tells us — hid her son as long as she could and, when she could no longer, placed him in a basket by the Nile. Trusting is doing everything within our reach and handing the rest to God.

Application: Hand over to God what you cannot control in your children’s lives.

3. A mother who teaches

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:15 · Read the chapter →

Timothy had known the Scriptures from childhood. His faith did not reach him by chance: it was taught at home, patiently, day after day.

Application: Children: thank and honour those who taught you the faith.

Conclusion

Proverbs says the children of the virtuous woman rise up and call her blessed. Today we honour mothers — and remember that the greatest legacy anyone can leave a child is a living faith in God.
