Sermon title

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit

Main idea

The fruit of the Spirit is not a list of virtues to achieve by effort, but the character of Christ that the Spirit forms in those who walk with him.

Text

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Introduction

Paul wrote to the Galatians to defend the freedom of the gospel. But freedom is not licence: they had been called to serve one another in love. To show the difference, Paul sets side by side the works of the flesh, which are manifest, and the fruit of the Spirit.

1. A fruit, not an achievement

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23 · Read the chapter →

Paul speaks of the “works” of the flesh, plural, and the “fruit” of the Spirit, singular: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance — temperance being the King James word for self-control. It is not a menu from which to pick one virtue, but a whole character. Fruit is not manufactured: it grows from a life joined to God.

Application: Read the list slowly and ask God to show you where your character still needs to grow.

2. The flesh has been crucified

And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Galatians 5:24 · Read the chapter →

They that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Life in the Spirit begins at the cross: it is not polishing up the old life, but treating it as something already said no to. That is why the struggle against sin is real, but never hopeless.

Application: Name one desire you have been feeding and decide to stop giving it room.

3. Keeping in step with the Spirit

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Galatians 5:25 · Read the chapter →

New life is a gift; walking is a daily responsibility, step by step. Straight afterwards Paul applies it to relationships: not seeking vain glory, not provoking or envying one another. The Spirit who gives life is the same one who guides every step.

Application: Practise the fruit where it is tested most: at home, with the people you live with every day.

Conclusion

Against such there is no law: the fruit of the Spirit fulfils what the law pointed to and what no rule can produce. Fruit grows slowly, in seasons, and only on a branch joined to the vine. Invite the church to walk with the Spirit — in the Word, in prayer and in serving one another — and to look to him for the growth.
