Psalms 5:3
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
David prayed early and then waited for the answer: morning prayer is also a posture of expectation.
Morning prayer
Starting the day in prayer means handing to God what has not even happened yet. The psalmists prayed “in the morning”, before their tasks. Below is a prayer to say when you wake up — aloud or in silence, with your own words alongside — and verses to pray in the morning.
Lord, thank you for another day. Before any task, before I check my phone, I want to begin with you.
You said your mercies are new every morning. I receive today’s mercy for today — I do not need to carry yesterday’s weight.
Guide my steps, my words and my decisions. Give me wisdom at work, patience with people, and a heart that notices whoever needs me.
Keep my home, my family and everyone I love. Wherever I go today, let me carry your peace.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Verses to pray in the morning
Psalms 143:8
Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.
A request for the day ahead: to hear God’s lovingkindness and know which way to go.
Lamentations 3:22-23
It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Today’s mercy is new: it does not have to be yesterday’s.
Psalms 90:14
O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
To ask to be satisfied in the morning is to ask that the day begin full of God.
Psalms 118:24
This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Every day is a gift: this is the day the Lord has made.
